Graca Machel gets 90 days to decide on Mandela’s will
Nelson Mandela’s widow, Graca Machel, has been granted 90 days to decide on whether she will waive her right to half of Mandela’s estate or not.
The Deputy Chief Justice, Dikgang Moseneke, made the disclosure on Tuesday when he read the will.
Following the release of the will on Monday, the provisional assessment of Mandela’s estate was about 4.6 million dollars.
Moseneke said the marriage between Mandela and Machel was in community of property.
He said when a couple was married in community of property, they were entitled to 50 per cent of the estate if one of them died.
He added that “Machel may opt to have exactly half of the estate. It’s an election that needs to happen in 90 days that’s still pending.’’
The deputy chief judge said should Machel waived her right to 50 per cent of the will, she would receive numerous items specified in it, including three houses, several cars and jewellery.
He said Machel had not yet given her decision.
Meanwhile, the Pan African News Agency (PANA) had reported that while Machel was widely credited for the support she gave Mandela in his twilight years, they got married on his 80th birthday.
It said Mandela’s previous wife, Winnie, had been completely excluded from his inheritance.
It added that Winnie was only mentioned in parts of the will made public in relation to her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
PANA said Mandela and Winnie were divorced after an acrimonious split in 1990 when she unsuccessfully sued for half of his estate which was then valued at about two million dollars. (PANA/NAN)
