The Associated Press reported on October 22, 2013 that Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas addressed an overflow crowd of about 1,000 people where he suggested that the Nigerian email scammers were running the Obamacare signup website.
“You may have noticed that all the Nigerian email scammers have become a lot less active lately. They all have been hired to run the Obamacare website.”
It was a great laugh line, though perhaps a little wide of the mark. The Nigerian email scammers, who have actually be in operation before the Internet when they used fax machines for their schemes, are adroit at separating people from their money. As Jon Stewart pointed out in a recent monologue, the Obamacare website does not work in that regard, unlike, say, Amazon.com.
In a larger sense, Cruz is quite right that Obamacare is now to be the whip by which he and others will flog the president and his supporters. Ron Fournier suggested in the National Journal that the Obamacare website disaster is something that should have the president very afraid. The disaster is worse than is being let on, actually encompasses the allegedly easy part of making the Affordable Care Act work, reflects poorly on the president and the government, and will likely hurt many Americans.
In that context, it can be said that at least the Nigerians will only clean out one’s bank account. The Obamacare website is not only a waste of time, but is symptomatic of larger problems concerning the law that promises to destroy the health insurance system in America, with attended suffering and unnecessary death as people cannot access health care.
