A World without Google

You really can change the world if you care enough. “Marian Wright Edelman”

Google is an American multinational corporation specializing in Internet-related services and products. These include online advertising technologies, search, cloud computing, and software.

Google was founded by Larry Page and Sergey Brin while they were Ph.D. students at Stanford University. They incorporated the company on September 4, 1998. They have an unofficial slogan which is “Don’t be evil. The slogan which I believe has a deep meaning and stands as a pillar for all there latest innovations which is centered around making the world a better place.

In Nigeria as at today, the top most visited sites in Nigeria is Google.com.ng closely followed by Google.com, that is to tell you there is hardly a smartphone user in Nigeria that do not visit Google. It has often become a use of English in between conversations. E.g. I Goggled your online profile, I Goggled the office address to find my location or Ask Google it will give you what you need.

All over the world we have suddenly seen Google as a Big Brother or a magician that knows everything. I tried to imagine a life without Google and here are some of my revelations:

1. My first finding was that, without Google I might not be able to put this article together without visiting a Library or going through a journal. Trust me the process would be cumbersome and time consuming

2. Also I found out that without Google many of us will be using smart phones and still be dumb.  Having a smart phone is cool but having a smart phone that cannot give you diverse access to information on the go, is as good as using a desktop phone.

3. I have also witnessed social media movements such as the #OccupyNigeria, #BringBackOurGirls campaign, but we might not witness in a long time a campaign against Google #WeDontNeedGoogle.

Google intelligence is out of this world. I recently found Google History; it stores all your search history.  It gives you the total number of searches per time, it goes as far as showing you images you searched for as far as 3 years ago, news you have read over time, shopping sites you have visited, ads you clicked on, videos you watched and so on. If you have not used this before try it here: https://history.google.com

We are all talking about the internet of things and Google has being able to add up to these things, without them it would have being an internet without the best search Engine, Gmail, Youtube, Blogger, Picassa, Google maps, Google Docs, Google Analytics, Google Adsense, Google Chrome, Google news, Google alert, Google Earth e.t.c

In recent news Google is set to announce a new payment API called the Android pay, which is set to launch in May at Google’s I/O conference. The Android pay will serve a payment system for in apps payment of third party apps. This platform will not generate so much revenue for Google according to inside sources but Google finds out it’s a good way to capture user information which it can use to deliver ads more effectively.

Whether we like it or not Google has taken over our lives, it would be very hard to do away with them in a very long time.
