Van Persie injury leaves Moyes sweating over possible United striker shortage

Manchester United manager David Moyes is sweating on an injury to Robin van Persie after the Old Trafford striker came off with a thigh problem during Tuesday’s 3-2 tour defeat by Yokohama  F-Marinos in Japan.

Moyes revealed after Tuesday’s game that Wayne Rooney’s hamstring injury is responding to treatment back in Manchester and he expects the 27-year-old forward to fly to Stockholm for a friendly on August 6.

The United manager reiterated that Rooney is not for sale but also said Van Persie has picked up an injury. ‘We’ve got a couple of wee worries,’ said Moyes.

‘Robin just felt his thigh in the first half and we didn’t want to take any chances.

‘Danny Welbeck also felt his groin when he went on and we’ve just got to make sure they’re all OK, especially with so many games coming up.

‘We’ve still got a few games to play before the season starts when we get back home.

‘As far as we know, Wayne is coming on. He’s started light jogging and the feedback I’m getting from the physios is that he’s progressing. Hopefully those dates are still on track.

We have said he is not for sale and our stance hasn’t changed.’

Moyes’ United team suffered their second tour defeat in three games on Tuesday and move on to Osaka on Wednesday, where they play again on Friday.

The club continues to pursue a deal to prise Cesc Fabregas from Barcelona but are finding it difficult.

Rivals such as Manchester City have already spent heavily this summer, but United claim not to be worried.

Defender Phil Jones said on Tuesday: ‘I don’t think the lads are too bothered who the players are that other teams are signing.

‘It’s totally irrelevant. We’re just concentrating on ourselves and what we’re about. We know what to do.It’s interesting.

‘Teams have got new managers but, if we’re anywhere near what we were at the start of  last season, then I’m sure  we’ll be fine.

‘We want to win games, we’re the champions and champions are used to winning games.

‘To get beaten like tonight is disappointing, the lads aren’t at all pleased, but we move on.

‘We know the levels that we can play at.

‘Tonight wasn’t clever, but I’m sure we’ll have a good start to the season.’
